Do you have or know of any high school students that are extremely interested in the
outdoors? If so, you may want to tell them about Camp Canopy. Camp Canopy is a
weeklong summer camp that occurs June 9-14th at the Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum in
Carrollton, Ohio. This camp features many of the classic summer camp activities while
also centering many of the activities of the camp around forestry and wildlife. This is
done by combining educational activities with Ohio’s top natural resource organizations,
industry experts, and state educational institutions with the great outdoors.
The goal of camp canopy is to get kids into the outdoors and help teach them about the
importance of forestry and wildlife management as well as expose them to the many
different careers that exist in the natural resources field. Many students who attend
Camp Canopy show such a great enjoyment and interest in the outdoors that they
continue onto study natural resource disciplines at their post-secondary institutions.
Some even secure jobs in the natural resource field once they have been through Camp
Canopy.
In the modern day there simply are not a lot of schools or summer camps that put a
focus on the great outdoors. That is another reason which makes Camp Canopy a great
opportunity for high school age kids to get out into nature and learn through the many
activities the camp offers. Some activities included at Camp Canopy to help educate
these students on wildlife and forestry include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, bird
watching, tree and plant identification, wildlife identification, tree climbing/ rappelling,
swimming, radiotelemetry, macroinvertebrate collecting, and electrofishing.
At the end of the students one week stay at Camp Canopy they will get to take part in a
test to show their knowledge of what they learned. Several lucky campers who score
the best will get selected to receive scholarships to colleges such as Ohio State
University’s College of Environment and Natural Resources, Hocking Colleges School
of Natural Resources, and Zane State College. Other scholarships are available for
students to use at the national resource school of their choice as well.
Registration for camp canopy is now open for 2025, and the cost of this event is $500.
