INFORMATION ABOUT THE EAST PALESTINE DERAILMENT
The derailment and subsequent spill in East Palestine is an ongoing situation that includes air monitoring, water testing, and soil sampling. Columbiana SWCD is coordinating with county agencies, the US EPA, the Ohio EPA, and the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) to provide monitoring feedback. The district has also been providing resources and other information to county residents.
We will continue to post information about available soil and water testing as well as other relevant updates as we receive them.
TESTING RESOURCES
WATER TESTING:
- Residents near East Palestine with drinking water wells can request testing by calling the
Columbiana County Health District at (330) 849-3919.
- Leetonia Water Lab | Conducts VOC tests, call to schedule testing. Tests water for some, not all, of
the compounds involved in the derailment. (330) 427-8087.
- Cardinal Environmental Laboratories | Conducts VOC tests, call to schedule testing. Tests water
for some, not all, of the compounds involved in the derailment. (330) 797-8844.
SOIL TESTING
- Columbiana SWCD’s contracted soil testing lab cannot conduct VOC tests on soil samples.
- Columbiana SWCD is working with county agencies, the US EPA, the Ohio EPA, and the Ohio
Department of Agriculture to provide feedback on a soil sampling plan in a radius around the
crash site. While components of this plan are under revision, we anticipate this plan to begin in
early March.
